Volunteer FAQs

At TRUEU, we value every hour our volunteers can give. You decide how often you’d like to be involved — whether it’s once a week, once a month, or just when your schedule allows, your time makes a difference.

Most of our volunteer shifts happen during weekdays, but in some locations we also offer evening and weekend opportunities. The length of a shift can vary from just a couple of hours to a full day, depending on the role.

We use a digital shift calendar, giving you full flexibility to choose the times that suit you best. Some roles may ask for a regular commitment, but most are open and flexible.

For the wellbeing of our volunteers, certain frontline roles may have limits on how often you can sign up (for example, no more than two shifts per week). These details will always be shared clearly during your induction.

Our Information & Induction Session is your chance to learn more about TRUEU — the work we do, the volunteer roles available in your area, and what’s involved in getting started. It’s also a great time to meet the team, ask questions, and see how you can make an impact.

Once you’ve submitted your details through the application form, your local Volunteer Coordinator will contact you with the next available session date. Sessions are usually held monthly or quarterly, depending on your location.

Each TRUEU location may have specific requirements for volunteers, and these will be explained during your Information & Induction Session. In most cases, volunteers will need to complete free online training (such as Manual Handling), and some roles may also require a recent Police Check (issued within the last 12 months).

Depending on the activity, extra steps may be needed — for example, a Working With Children Check or short online Food Safety training.

If you’re unsure about the requirements for your role, your local Volunteer Coordinator will guide you through the process and answer any questions.

Please note: having something on your police check does not automatically exclude you from volunteering. It simply means we’ll work with you to find the role that best fits.

Volunteering with TRUEU is free. However, in some locations you may need to cover the cost of a Police Check (issued within the last 12 months).

  • If you already have a valid Police Check, you can simply submit it and may not need a new one.

  • If you don’t have one yet, we’ll guide you on how to apply during your Information Session.

If covering this cost is a challenge, let your local Volunteer Coordinator know — we’ll work with you to find a solution.

Please note: having something on your Police Check does not automatically exclude you from volunteering. It just means we’ll help you find the role that suits you best.

Yes — all TRUEU volunteers are asked to wear a TRUEU T‑shirt during their shifts. This helps us stay visible, recognisable, and connected as a team.

If you’re helping with food preparation or distribution, please make sure to wear closed-toe shoes and keep long hair tied back for safety.

For most roles at TRUEU, a reference check is not required. However, for certain positions — especially those involving children or vulnerable communities — additional checks may apply.

  • Some roles may ask for a Police Check (issued within the last 12 months).

  • If working with children, a Working With Children Check (WWCC) may also be needed, depending on your location.

Don’t worry — your Volunteer Coordinator will let you know if these checks are required for the role you’re interested in, and will guide you through the process.

Please note: a result on a Police Check does not automatically disqualify you from volunteering. It just means we’ll work with you to find the role that best suits your situation.

Most volunteer roles at TRUEU only require a short on-the-job introduction during your first shift. This ensures you feel comfortable and confident in what you’re doing.

For some specialised roles — for example, those involving food preparation, working with children, or coordinating community events — additional training may be required. In some cases, you might shadow an experienced volunteer or complete a trial shift before taking on regular duties.

Don’t worry — if extra training is needed, we’ll provide it free of charge and guide you every step of the way.

That’s fantastic! To get started, simply complete the form above and let us know you’re enquiring on behalf of your workplace team. Our Workplace Engagement team will then get in touch to guide you through the options and help organise the experience.

Yes! At TRUEU, we welcome volunteers under 18 who want to get involved and make a difference. Some roles may require parental or guardian consent, and shift availability can depend on your location.

Whether it’s joining community projects, helping at events, or spreading awareness through school-based initiatives, there are plenty of ways for young people to contribute and be part of the TRUEU mission.

At TRUEU, we believe every act of service deserves appreciation. While our volunteer roles are unpaid, you’ll gain valuable experience, build connections, and make a direct impact in your community. We also celebrate our volunteers through recognition events, certificates, and sharing inspiring stories. In addition, we proudly feature our volunteers on the TRUEU website and highlight their contributions on our social media channels.

Yes! Alongside in-person roles, TRUEU offers remote opportunities — from digital fundraising and community outreach to content creation and social media support. This way, you can make an impact no matter where you are.
